Bronwen Corrall, M.A.

Artist’s Statement

The two themes of my work are the vessel as a medium for artistic expression and the infinite variations within a natural population. Within my work I have created small ‘populations’ of thrown and turned porcelain vessels, each different but each reflecting others in the group. The history and cultural significance of the vessel are closely allied to the potter’s wheel, my chosen method of making. The magic of pulling a vessel from a lump of clay is linked to the laws of nature; the spinning of the earth that creates day and night and the motion that brings seasonal change. I see in any natural group, from mountains to pebbles or fruit to people, similarities that demark a population and variations that illustrate both subtle and obvious changes created by history, hereditary and environment.
